Creating Social Media Content Is Easier Than You Think
Creating engaging content for your business social media accounts may sometimes seem like a daunting, never-ending task. But it really doesn't have to be! If you use social media for personal use, you are probably already posting without much thought or effort. Let's take a peek at what a typical week of activity on my personal Facebook page might look like and how it can easily translate to the types of posts you can develop for your business page with little effort.
Monday - Event Post
Personal Page - I took a photo on Instagram and uploaded it to Facebook of myself and my friend at a concert watching a great local band. I tagged my friend so it would show up on her page and added a hashtag of the name of the band.
Business Page - While at a business event, take a couple of photos and upload to your LinkedIn business page and write a couple of sentences about the event (name of event, why you attended, and the value you gained from being there.) Tag attendees who accompanied you to the event and hashtag as needed to create awareness on other LinkedIn business pages to get exposure and grow your following. If you happened to "blog" about the event, include a link to your blog post to drive traffic to your website.
Tuesday - Article Re-Post
Personal Page - While browsing Facebook one morning, I spotted an interesting article that I decided to "share" on my wall so all my Facebook friends could read. I included a sentence about why I thought it was interesting and tagged a couple of friends, so it would show up on her wall so they could read it.
Business Page - Like the personal example above, you should be joining and "liking" other industry-related groups and business pages so you can browse their content. When you see something interesting, "share" it on your business page so your followers can read it. Always include a sentence on "your take" of the article. Tag and hashtag appropriately to promote exposure and grow your following.
Wednesday - Survey/Research Poll Post
Personal Page - We were going on a family trip to San Francisco and so I needed some information on kid-friendly hotels in the area. I posted a question on Facebook to my followers to get their best "picks" for such hotels.
Business Page - Use the Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn poll to survey your followers on any relevant business issue or need where you would find their feedback helpful. For example, "What method of communication do you prefer to be contacted by a business regarding updates to a product/service?" Provide multiple choice answers. Then, post the results of the poll and thank them for their participation. This a great way garner exposure and awareness for your brand, promote engagement, and to get feedback from your target audience on a business decision.
Thursday - Inspirational Photo Quote
Personal Page - I always "share" funny or inspiration photo quotes that I see on social media, especially if they resonate with me.
Business Page - Look for funny or inspirational quotes that pertain to your industry or business. The more creative the better, such a video or photo quote to stand out more in the crowd. These types of posts are great for communicating your company’s mission, vision, and values.
Friday - Recommendation of New Place, Special, Product, or Service
Personal Page - At a new restaurant I enjoyed, I took a photo of my amazing dessert, and wrote a sentence about the beautiful presentation, checked in to the restaurant on social, and posted it.
Business Page - If you have a new product/service/special discount that has launched, write a post about it, including the website link that describes the new product/service. This will drive traffic to your website resulting in increased website traffic, brand/product/service awareness, and possible interest that could lead to sales.
So, there you go! 5 posts in 5 days that were all different and relevant to your business. And just like on your personal page, it didn't take much thought or effort to come up with the content.
Other tips to remember when posting on Social Media:
Variety
Vary your posts so that they are not all the same "type" of post. In the examples above each post was a different type of post: event, article, quote, research poll, new product/service, check-in, blog post link, etc.
Include Photos and Videos
Research shows that posts with videos and photos perform significantly better than posts without. Take videos and photos of events you are attending, include photos on your web pages, use stock photography and Canva when needed to be creative.
Vary Timing
Vary your timing of posts. Different social media sites have "prime" times when your followers are the most engaged. Do your research to see which time of the day and days of the week are ideal for each social media site and your target audience.
Tagging
Don't forget to tag, @mention, and hashtag in your posts. This alerts others such as influencers, client companies, customers, and industry knowledge leaders which can help get your business recognized, keep them engaged, and grow your social media following. Remember, social media is about "sharing" and the more you share by tagging, @mentions, and hashtags, the better.
Get Leadership and Employees Involved
Social media posting is a team effort, meaning that everyone in the company can contribute. If leadership is going to an event, remind them to take photos and send them to your social media specialist with a sentence, name of attendees, and event name. Leadership or employees can share company posts on their LinkedIn profiles to encourage more brand awareness and engagement. Remember that webinars, events, blog posts, and charitable initiatives make great social posts and help communicate your company’s brand story and differentiators.
Creating an editorial content calendar is a great way to more efficiently organize your weekly or monthly social media posts so you can design your posts at one sitting to ensure variety and schedule all at once using a automated social media software to create efficiencies.
And, finally, you may be thinking, I don't use social media at all, even for personal use...well, at least after reading this blog post you probably have a better understanding of how to get started with social media for your business.
